The Importance of Metal Detection in Pet Food Safety - WelPet's Commitment to Quality
The pet economy has seen a significant rise in recent years, and with it, pet owners are becoming more aware of the importance of the quality and safety of the food products they provide for their furry companions. To meet this growing demand for safe and high-quality pet food, companies like WelPet are taking steps to ensure that their products meet the highest standards in food safety and quality management. One of the key ways WelPet is achieving this is through the use of advanced technology, such as metal detector machines for food industry.
WelPet is committed to food safety and quality management and has obtained SQF(Safe Quality Food) Level 3 Diamond Certification, the only internationally recognized food quality certification that combines both "operational excellence" and "product safety and quality." Additionally, it is the only food quality seal recognized by GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) that can be applied to products. After a rigorous audit, WelPet became Taiwan's first pet health product manufacturer to obtain SQF Level 3 Diamond Certification in 2022.
Wel-Bloom, the parent company of WelPet, started as a dietary supplement manufacturer and has since expanded into the pet health food industry through its subsidiary, WelPet. Recognizing the importance of food safety and quality management, WelPet places a strong emphasis on preparedness and planning. Therefore, in addition to the SQF, WelPet also adopted the food safety requirements of Costco, the well-known American warehouse chain, as the audit standard. This standard is more rigorous and detailed than the current regulations in Taiwan and includes the use of metal detector machines to detect and eliminate metallic contaminants in food.
While the general standard only requires detection to be performed at the beginning and end of the production line, Costco requires facilities to perform documented detector challenges at an interval of two hours to ensure that products are free of physical contaminants. Although the requirement increases the complexity of food processing, it guarantees a higher level of food safety.
According to WelPet's Deputy Factory Director, Harry Liu, pet food safety inspection should be more stringent than that of humans because pets will not pick out foreign objects, and it is easy to have accidental ingestion. In order to reduce the risk of food hazards caused by mixing metallic foreign objects, all production lines, whether it is jelly, powder, or beverage, have a preparation step before the filling process to check the equipment. Staff members are also required to record the inspection process to ensure that machine parts are not mixed with the product during the production process. Metal detection is especially established as a critical control point (CCP) to minimize the risk of contamination.
