Tackling Pet Tear Stains: Identifying Causes and Effective Solutions
This article was written by Dr. Shang-Hsiu Chung, a veterinarian at Always Care Veterinary Hospital
One of the favorite features of pets for their owners is often their bright eyes, which are also an important way to establish an emotional connection with them. However, when pets experience discomfort or illness in their eyes, increased tear production can become a breeding ground for bacteria, leading to unsightly tear stains. To keep pets away from tear stains, let's first understand the reasons for their appearance and how to prevent and improve them.
Tears serve a protective function for the eyes
When it comes to pet tear stains, it's important to first mention the function of tears. Pet tears serve as a bactericidal and immunological agent, helping to protect the eyes from infections and pathogens. In addition to their protective role, tears also have a cleansing function. When a pet's eyes are irritated by dust, foreign objects, or secretions, tears help to flush out any impurities. Furthermore, tears act as a natural protective barrier for the cornea, shielding it from harm. They also provide numerous nutrients to the cornea and keep it moisturized. Under normal circumstances, tears flow through the upper and lower tear ducts into the nasal lacrimal duct, then drain into the back of the nose and throat, allowing for smooth drainage. Therefore, the multifunctionality of tears and their normal metabolic pathway provide comprehensive protection and bright eyes for pets. The two main reasons for the formation of pet tear stains
The tears that cannot be drained through the nasolacrimal duct will flow out from the corners of the eyes and wet the fur. Tears contain porphyrin, which oxidizes upon contact with air, turning into the familiar reddish-brown tear stains. This not only causes discomfort to pets but also gradually produces an unpleasant odor, which can be very troubling for pet owners. The causes of tear stains can be mainly categorized into two parts. The first part is excessive tear secretion, which overwhelms the drainage capacity of the nasolacrimal duct. Common reasons include eye diseases, respiratory diseases, allergies, and congenital structural abnormalities (such as ectopic cilia, abnormal eyelid development). The second part is normal tear secretion, but the tears cannot be drained properly through the nasolacrimal duct. Common reasons include congenital developmental abnormalities or acquired inflammation leading to nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Differences in breeds and facial structure may also contribute, making some dogs more prone to tear gland blockage and resulting in long-term tear stain issues. For example, brachycephalic breeds such as Pugs, Shih Tzus, and Pekingese have limited tear drainage due to the large curvature of their nasolacrimal ducts. Breeds with protruding eyes like Pomeranians and Chihuahuas are prone to pressure on the tear points, while breeds with narrow tear duct spaces like Poodles and Bichons may experience tear overflow due to insufficient capacity to accommodate tears. These breeds are more likely to have difficulty in normal tear drainage, leading to persistent tear stains.
Five tips to help pets regain bright eyes
When pet tear stains appear, the first step is to consult a veterinarian to rule out the common causes mentioned above. In addition, the following methods can help prevent and improve tear stain problems:- Eye area care: Regularly trim and groom the excessively long eyelashes and fur around the eyes to reduce irritation to the eyes.
- Bathing and cleaning: During bathing, avoid excessive water entering the eyes and prevent shampoo from causing discomfort by getting into the eyes.
- Environmental cleanliness: Maintain a clean environment to reduce allergens in the living environment, including contact and dietary allergens.
- Health prevention plan: Administer regular vaccinations and preventive measures against internal and external parasites to boost immunity.
- Nutritional supplementation: Provide pets with appropriate nutritional supplements such as taurine, lutein, fish oil, hyaluronic acid, and calendula extract to enhance immunity and maintain eye health.
Through the above methods, you can help prevent and improve tear stain problems in pets. Would you like to choose your own pet care formula?
